A Walk to Remember: Raising Breast Cancer Awareness in Douglasville, GA

Table of Contents

Hello everyone! I’m Dr. Amber Glenn, a board-certified OBGYN and a passionate advocate for women’s health. I’m excited to share with you my recent experience leading one of the first ‘Walk with a Doc’ events in our lovely town of Douglasville, GA, on October 14.

October is globally recognized as breast cancer awareness month, and as an OBGYN who cares for numerous women, it was an absolute honor and joy to lead this walk. The event was a delightful blend of education, discussion, and exercise – a sweet time indeed!

The Morning Buzz

The day started bright and early at 8:30 am. Our team had set up tables filled with educational materials on breast cancer awareness, some freebies for the attendees, and water to keep us hydrated. Our energetic walkers started trickling into the park, and we kicked off the event with an engaging discussion about breast cancer awareness and the significance of regular breast exams.

I took this opportunity to introduce facts about breast cancer, including its signs/symptoms, risk factors, and the different ways one can reduce their risk. The attendees posed some insightful questions, which enriched our dialogue significantly. Following this informative session, we began our walk around the beautiful Hunter Park.

Walking, Talking and Building Community

Walking and talking together was an amazing experience. I managed to get my steps in while meeting and interacting with numerous wonderful women from our community. This event was not only a great opportunity to promote physical activity but also served as a platform for community members to connect with local healthcare professionals.

Why Walking?

You might be wondering why walking? According to health organizations, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. It’s low impact nature makes it easier on the joints compared to running and is safe (with a doctor’s approval) for people with orthopedic ailments, heart conditions, or those who are more than 20% overweight.

In an effort to promote a healthier lifestyle within our city, Douglasville has launched the ‘Walk with a Doc’ series. These events provide community members an opportunity to meet local physicians and receive a prescription for “man’s best medicine” – walking!

Join Us for the Next Walk!

These walks are held on the 2nd Saturday of every month at Hunter Park. Each session covers a prominent health topic presented by a local healthcare professional. We then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk and engaging conversations.

I can’t wait for our next walk! Will you join us?

Stay healthy,
Dr. Amber Glenn
